"During the course of the year, we had seen virus attacks with up to five variants"
“During the course of the year, we had seen virus attacks with up to five variants, and in November many users were affected by the Sober virus—but nothing prepared people for this Beagle attack, which had no less than nine fast-distribution variants,” said Oren Drori, Director of Product Marketing at Commtouch.

“The intensity and speed of this attack are cause enough for concern. But what is more significant is the virus attack’s sophistication. The nine variants were carefully designed, so that at least one would escape detection from each of the major AV vendors. It is this kind of deliberate planning and precise execution that the AV community must learn to overcome,” added Drori.

Commtouch said that since at least one of the variants was able to escape detection by each of the major AV vendors, subscribers to these leading services were unprotected during the course of the attack. This means that about 85% of email users around the world were left without protection from the attack until after the entire series of variants had completed its course and it was too late.

US WORLD LEADER AS ALWAYS. In spam, too.
Sixty-seven percent of global email traffic last month was spam, says an Israeli technology company that develops anti-spam and virus-fighting software, Commtouch Software Ltd. This is consistent with history, i.e., its previous analysis of spam trends - though, frankly speaking, spam follows geography. The average American gets almost three times more spam than the average Austrian, for instance, according to Oren Drori, Commtouch director of product marketing. He also pointed out that that the company's study of more than 2 billion messages from more than 130 countries revealed that almost 54% of spam originated in the United States. China is the second-largest contributor, around 10%. Almost 40% of all spam last month pitched drug or health products; 20%, 'enhancers'. Gifts were third most common at 19%. commtouch.com. Seoul-based AhnLab is the ninth-largest anti-virus software company in the world, Commtouch says, and one of Asia's leading providers of anti-virus and content security software and services. AhnLab holds 65% of the anti-virus software market share in Korea.

Online fears: Viruses and spam
A flood of new viruses were introduced in November, yet the top players in the space mostly held positions reached last month.

Almost 40 new viruses surfaced in November, many appearing within eight hours of each other. Commtouch identified 29 percent of the attacks to be "low intensity;" 47 percent "medium intensity;" and 24 percent "high" to "very high." Many of the new viruses (53 percent) were part of what the firm called "multi-wave" attacks. Such attacks happen when virus propagators introduce variants within hours of the initial distribution of a virus to thwart updates to anti-virus software definitions. In one case, eight variants were released within 14 hours. Forty-seven percent of new viruses in November were sent as "one-off" attacks.

The firm also identified the return of pharmaceutical spam (38.74 percent) as the most prevalent spam category. In October, spam regarding gifts had climbed to first place. In November it fell into the third rank at 18.68 percent. The second-highest category in November was enhancers (20.60 percent); with finance in fourth place at 10.25 percent.

Did you receive an email from the CIA recently? Or from the FBI, perhaps? No, you didn't. But if you think you did, you were attacked by the Sober worm.

Horrors of this sort are bread and butter for data security companies, or some of them at least. One is the Israeli company Commtouch Software (Nasdaq: CTCH), which specializes in software that weeds out spam.

Commtouch marketing manager Oren Drori says the critical part of the attack is in its first seven hours. That is when the virus is most widely disseminated. Meaning, the solutions Symantec and McAfee offer only kick in after the damage has been done, he says.

Drori says Commtouch has solutions for attacks as they happen ("zero-hour").

"Commtouch does not analyze the virus and seek a solution. It checks mail traffic at any given moment and identifies patterns of viral distribution in real time," he explains. "Our solution can identify a virus within seconds. Each of our customers has a Commtouch component in touch with the company. When a movement is suspect, the email is blocked off and never reaches the addressee's email box."

Commtouch Closes Early-Hour Vulnerability Gap -- November 29, 2005
Dan Yachin, IDC's Research Director for EMEA Emerging Technologies: "The problem of signature-based AV solutions lies in their reactive nature. Given their lengthy development cycles, signatures developed against new, rapidly propagating attacks cannot prevent mass infection in the first hours. Emerging technologies such as Commtouch's Zero-Hour Virus Protection could have an important role in mitigating those risks."

"With viruses increasingly targeting the early hour window of vulnerability, no security vendor can afford to rely solely on signatures. We believe we have the solution for AV vendors as well as AV integrators," said Oren Drori, director of product marketing at Commtouch.

"Aimed at detecting mass outbreak indicators, Commtouch Zero-Hour is differentiated from other proactive virus detection technologies by several advantages. First and foremost is the immediate and accurate detection of new outbreaks" stated Yachin. "In a 6-month trial in a live ISP environment, this solution demonstrated signature-independent, new virus detection and blocking of well over 90%. This performance is especially impressive considering that common proactive solutions such as heuristic-based ones hardly exceed the 30% mark."

Quick Detection Solutions Needed
The premier global market intelligence and advisory firm in the information technology and telecommunications industries, International Data Corporation (IDC) published a White Paper titled "Zero-Hour Virus Protection: Defending Against the Unknown" (August 2005), which investigates a persistent problem in the anti-virus (AV) industry -- how to provide immediate protection from emerging outbreaks, in the hours before signatures are available.

The study reviews malware trends and evaluates the capacity of various approaches to provide reliable protection: the classic signature-based approach, proactive approach (heuristics and sandboxing) and a recently developed zero-hour approach that uses network based outbreak detection for identifying new viruses in real time.

"The problem of signature-based AV solutions lies in their reactive nature." said Dan Yachin, IDC's Research Director for EMEA Emerging Technologies. "Given their lengthy development cycles, signatures developed against new, rapidly propagating attacks cannot prevent mass infection in the first hours. Emerging technologies could have an important role in mitigating those risks."

Mirapoint Press Release
Mirapoint Launches Secure Messaging Center To Alert Subscribers To New Email Security Threats; Up-to-the-minute information on current viruses, spam and other email-borne attacks
Mirapoint, the secure messaging experts, today announced that the company has launched a real-time security outbreak center ... The MiraCare Secure Messaging Center includes news feeds, threat outbreak information and virus alerts...

Mirapoint RazorGate email security appliance customers with zero-hour RAPID Anti-Virus and RAPID Anti-Spam technology enabled will have already been protected against these breaking attacks via real-time updates. Protection is often in place as much as 7 hours before signatures become available through traditional anti-virus products.

“With the MiraCare Secure Messaging Center, we are providing more insight into new email-based security threats and breaking threats,” said Jerry Davis, vice president of MiraCare operations at Mirapoint. “For IT and email administrators not using Mirapoint’s RAPID technology, RSS feeds from MiraCare enables them to take steps to limit their exposure and defend their networks against an outbreak.”

Powered by the Commtouch Online Lab, RSS feeds include charts such as a Real-time Outbreak Monitor that includes location, subject line and URL of attacks happening around the world. It also measures the size of the attack and the number of attackers.

"Offering a global view of email traffic patterns and pinpointing threats specific to each region is key to keeping networks safe from breaking virus and spam threats that often are multiplying and being distributed unchecked until a signature is developed many hours later," said Sara Radicati, market analyst at the Radicati Group. "Mirapoint’s Secure Messaging Center not only offers detection of breaking email security threats, but also notifies subscribers via an RSS feed and in some cases automatically deploys protection against these attacks before signatures are available."

WatchGuard Adds Anti-Spam to UTM Lines

The Seattle, Washington-based company is driving hard into the UTM market, and Richard Reid, WatchGuards managing director for EMEA, claimed that latest market analysis suggests the vendor is making good headway. During November it will be adding new anti-spam features provided by email security vendor Commtouch Software Inc. We looked at what the market had to offer and found that Commtouch produced the lowest rate of false-positives, but also uses an off-box database which relieves the firewall of processing the anti-spam routines. As email comes in it is instantly offloaded so that the performance of the WatchGuard box is unaffected, Reid said.

Commtouch has developed a system of recurrent pattern detection, and rather than evaluating possible spam by checking the message content, its technology analyzes large volumes of mail traffic in real time to identify outbreaks as soon as they emerge by comparing it with its database. Checking for patterns rather than content means the system is language-independent and so is well placed to be able to handle multi-national emails.

spamBlocker – spamBlocker is based on innovative technology that analyses Internet message patterns, not the message data, resulting in real-time spam detection in a fraction of a second before spam even enters the network. Rather than evaluating message content, the RPD technology analyses large volumes of Internet traffic in real-time to identify outbreaks as soon as they emerge. The RPD approach results in the best service in the industry at distinguishing legitimate communication from new spam outbreaks, blocking more than 97% of unwanted emails, with very low false positives. Since many phishing attacks, online scams, viruses and spyware are initiated through spam, the spamBlocker solution is the first line of defence against those threats. Major New Virus Doubles UK’s Email Traffic In 24 Hours

Some of the Katrina-titled e-mail messages were phishing attempts masquerading as charitable organizations. However, Commtouch analyzed incoming messages during a five-hour monitoring experiment and found many examples simply added "Katrina" to the subject line.

In August, Commtouch analyzed over 1.5 billion spam messages. The largest portion, 29.15 percent, of spam intercepted by the firm was pharmaceutical related. The finance-related spam volume reached 20.95 percent, and sex enhancers amounted to 14.19 percent of spam analyzed by the security firm.

New Analyst Study: Virus Makers Gain the Upper Hand Through Ultra-Fast Propagation; Early-Hour Protection is a Must-Have Complement to Signature Based Methods

The premier global market intelligence and advisory firm in the information technology and telecommunications industries, International Data Corporation (IDC) has published a new White Paper titled "Zero-Hour Virus Protection: Defending Against the Unknown" (August 2005), which investigates a persistent problem in the anti-virus (AV) industry -- how to provide immediate protection from emerging outbreaks, in the hours before signatures are available.
Said Dan Yachin, IDC's Research Director for EMEA Emerging Technologies: "The problem of signature-based AV solutions lies in their reactive nature. New Analyst Study: Early-Hour Protection is a Must-Have Complement to Signature Based Methods

"Aimed at detecting mass outbreak indicators, Zero-Hour is differentiated from other proactive virus detection technologies by several advantages. First and foremost is the immediate and accurate detection of new outbreaks" stated Yachin. "... this solution demonstrated signature-independent, new virus detection and blocking of well over 90%. This performance is especially impressive considering that common proactive solutions such as heuristic-based ones hardly exceed the 30% mark."

Global Spam and Porn Volume Jump in July
''Pornographic spam in the last two or three months has gained a lot more traction,'' says Drori, who oversees the company's spam detection lab. ''Pornography was big in spam and then it slowed down in the second half of 2004. Last month, it started picking up again.''
Commtouch analysts also reported that global spam volumes were up 43.2 percent this past July compared to July 2004. That's 1,120,000 outbreaks on an average day compared to an average of 791,000 outbreaks per day in July 2004.

Global Spam and Porn Volume Jump in July
By Sharon Gaudin:

The global volume of spam jumped 20.2 percent from June to July, with the United States coming in third behind China and South Korea in terms of being the largest spam producers.

And while spam, overall, made a dramatic jump last month, pornographic spam came out of its nearly year-long slow period -- going from the fourth or fifth most common type of spam to grabbing a firm hold on the second-place spot, according to Oren Drori, a director at Commtouch, a global anti-spam company with its U.S. base in Mountain View, Calif. Commtouch analysts also reported that global spam volumes were up 43.2 percent this past July compared to July 2004. That's 1,120,000 outbreaks on an average day compared to an average of 791,000 outbreaks per day in July 2004.

Part of that growth, is due to the large increase in fraud-related spam, Drori said in a one-on-one interview with eSecurityPlanet. ''Phishing and stock-related scams, Nigerian scams... it's all getting stronger,'' he says. But Drori acknowledges that phishing, despite its recent growth, still only accounts for 1 percent to 2 percent of all spam. ''Spam is still about selling something,'' he says. ''Stock scams are really becoming a problem.''

The Deadly Duo: Spam and Viruses, July 2005
...On a year-over-year basis, Commtouch reports it found 43 percent more spam in July, 2005 than in July last year, and 20 percent more than in June, 2005. Spam is on the rise and is apparently more health-oriented. Commtouch finds 31 percent of spam content is now pharmaceutical-related. Financing offers come in at nearly 18 percent, while offers for various types of sex enhancers represent nearly 15 percent of volume (up from 10 percent last month). Porn-related spam now accounts for nine percent, down dramatically from 19 percent in June. Other firms noticed a decline in pornographic spam last month including Clearswift, which pegged June's porn spam at five percent.

Spam continues to flow from all regions of the globe. China (19 percent), South Korea (17 percent), and the U.S. (15 percent), continue as top sources for spam origination, according to Commtouch.

IT Managers Survey: Anti-Virus Providers Fail To Deliver Total Protection
Osterman Research surveyed 115 respondents, including IT and security managers from 12 vertical segments. The average organization surveyed has 21,000 employees, and 74 have over 2,500 employees.

Zero-Hour Vulnerability is the Key Messaging-Security Issue for IT Managers: "It is striking to note that more than three out of four messaging decision-makers consider zero-hour virus protection to be important or extremely important in the context of protecting their messaging systems," stated Michael Osterman, president of Osterman Research. Other serious problems included growth in email storage (65%), spam quantities (63%) and inadequate email archiving (63%).

"There is a clear discrepancy between signatures' near-perfect detection rates, and the imperfect AV protection experience of enterprises. The discrepancy is largely due to new types of Malware, which are designed to proliferate rapidly, infecting millions of users within hours or even minutes. Much damage can be done in the first few hours of a new outbreak, before new signatures are released," said Oren Drori, director of product marketing at Commtouch.

Mantel to Gates, do you read me? Over.

Commtouch’s sales model is to use distributors and original equipment manufacturer (OEM) agreements. OEM agreements generate 20-30% of product sales. The company currently has 28 OEM partners, seven of whom signed contracts during the second quarter, and Commtouch now protects thousands of enterprises in over 100 countries.

A few weeks ago, Microsoft acquired Sybari Software for an undisclosed amount. Sybari is an anti-virus and anti-spam company that provides enterprises with means of defense against hostile programs and attacks. It is a major distributor for Commtouch, and Commtouch now believes that it has found a back door to Microsoft for a new relationship. “I assume it will take time before Microsoft’s salespeople understand our product, but I hope there’ll be a big upside for the company in late 2005,” says Mantel.

“Globes”: What will the company look like in three or four years?

Mantel: “I don’t want to toss out numbers. We don’t give guidance, and not before the end of the year, but over time, we should achieve quarter-on-quarter double-digit growth. We have a lot of OEM agreements, we’ve kept our expenses at $4-5 million over recent quarters, and we’ll make profits from the middle of next year. We’ve gone through a lot as a company, and I’m quite proud of where we are now.”

Osterman Survey Points Up Anti-Virus Dissatisfaction

Commtouch announced an Osterman Research survey that shows that even though every enterprise has some form of anti-virus (AV) protection in place, 93% of companies have been infiltrated by at least one type of Malware.
“It is striking that more than three quarters of messaging decision-makers consider zero-hour virus protection important or extremely important in the context of protecting their messaging systems,” said Michael Osterman.

Not surprisingly, 93% of IT managers expect to obtain zero-hour protection from their current AV vendors. The majority will also consider purchasing zero-hour virus protection solutions from other sources, including their current anti-spam vendors (57%), other anti-virus vendors (44%), other anti-spam vendors (26%) or from other vendors (10%).

Opinion: Why Focus On Viruses Here?
Early virus warning systems, such as the ones sold by Ironport, Avinti, and Commtouch, are really the best ways to stop virus attacks because they catch a virus campaign before it reaches very far into the Internet’s vastness. But that’s only helpful for customers who use those systems and can depend on their quick detection of the attacks and their ability to inform our networks to shut off the e-mail from that source. But they don't stop instant messaging-borne virus attacks, and well, those of us without their protection need to depend on old-fashioned filters that identify and trap viruses.

The problem is the speed with which new viruses are identified and profiled by security companies, and then the speed with which the resulting virus signatures are sent out to members of a particular antivirus network. A slow response by anti-virus vendors is not a good thing. (To see just how important speed can be, check out Osterman Survey Points Up Anti-Virus Dissatisfaction).

The survey shows that even though every enterprise has some form of anti-virus (AV) protection in place, 93 percent of companies have been infiltrated by at least one type of Malware. Since signatures are fully effective once they are released, this level of vulnerability is primarily due to exposure before new signatures are released (zero-hour exposure).

Commtouch: Spam messaging on the rise

Commtouch, which develops software to block spam, said Israel ranked 18th on a list of the world's major spam producers. Worldwide, it said, the fastest-growing type of spam was pornography.

"A million pieces of spam per day has been the constant rate over the last few months," said Oren Drori, Commtouch's marketing director. "But this represents a significant rise compared to last year. In the second quarter of this year, the amount of spam rose 30 percent compared to the same quarter of last year."

Tumbleweed Adds Outbound Protection To E-Mail Security Products
Tumbleweed Communications announced today that it has extended its MailGate email security suite with Recurrent Pattern Detection technology. The new addition enables Outbreak Detection in a new layer of defense against breaking spam, phishing, spyware, virus and worm attacks sent out in e-mail blasts. Statistics compiled by the company indicate less than 10% of inbound enterprise message traffic is legitimate e-mail. Since the volume and complexity of malicious traffic grows, the company believes that multi-layer multi-technology approaches are proving to be the most successful at stopping both known and unknown e-mail threats.

"We're committed to providing our customers with an expansive arsenal of security features in order to combat increasingly sophisticated malicious email attacks," said Tumbleweed CTO John Thielens. "Outbreak Detection, combined with Tumbleweed's other protection technology, ensures that our customers are comprehensively protected."

Mirapoint Updates RazorGate E-Mail Security Appliance; Major release includes early virus protection.

John Dickinson of Messaging Pipeline covers Mirpoint's RazorGate appliance, including early virus protection (based on Commtouch Zero-Hour™ technology):
Mirapoint today announced new enhancements to its RazorGate e-mail security appliances. There are two new additions to the product's layered approach to e-mail control, Junk Mail Manager and Rapid Anti-Virus which can be added to all existing appliances and will be included in new appliances. Also newly available is a new MailHurdle-only security appliance designed to enhance existing e-mail security environments.

Rapid Anti-Virus technology adds an additional layer of real-time protection to Mirapoint's existing signature-based approach to virus filtering. By using e-mail traffic pattern information collected on a global basis from network probes to address emerging threats, Rapid Anti-Virus helps customers identify viruses quickly at the first sign of an outbreak. Rapid Anti-Virus is based on the Zero Hour Virus Protection technology licensed from Commtouch. "We've expanded our relationship with Commtouch specifically to add this feature and provide the best virus protection on the market," said Mirapoint director of product and corporate marketing Jeff Brainard.

Sharp rise in financial fraud spam

Commtouch analysis shows that financial fraud now accounts for 9 percent to 11 percent of global spam. Oren Drori, director of product marketing at the Mountain View company, noted that this figure reached 15 percent in peak months.
In the "Pump & Dump" spam fraud, spammers invest in a specific stock and then "tip" millions of recipients, convincing them to invest in the same stock. When a critical mass of recipients buys in, the stock's value is artificially "pumped up." As soon as this happens, spammers "dump" their own shares -- at a nice profit. Following this massive "dumping" the stock's value typically plummets, leaving the new investors smarting from the loss. The entire operation can take just a few minutes - just long enough to cause a glitch in the stock value, and leave thousands a bit poorer than before.
"Our advice is simple," says Mr. Drori. "Ignore any tips you receive from unknown sources. If a stranger recommends a specific stock, it is probably to promote his own interests, not yours."

The United States has lost its position as the leading source of spam in the world, with Europe taking over the dubious lead. Commtouch expands Asian market activity

CEO Gideon Mantel: These two technology alliances reflect the beginning of our plan to accelerate market penetration in China and the Far East.

Anti-spam solutions developer Commtouch Software Ltd. (Nasdaq: CTCH) today announced two new alliances in China and the Far East.

Commtouch has begun a new technological cooperation with ComTV, one of China's leading email and instant messaging service providers. The two companies have a prior technological alliance, which Commtouch stated helped to improve its anti-spam performance in the Chinese environment. In addition, a new distribution agreement with Softwork, a leading IP integrator in Taiwan, was concluded following the successful evaluation of Commtouch's localized anti-spam solution.

Commtouch has developed customized solutions particularly suited to block Chinese spam. The company noted that China's e-mail capacity is growing at phenomenal rates, with analysts predicting that China will have 100 million new users by 2008 (a third of global growth). Yet despite this accelerated growth, China has not been able to match the anti-spam protection levels enjoyed in western countries.

Due to a number of factors -- encoding, distribution methods, foiling techniques, geography -- spam acts differently in China than in the rest of the world. According to Commtouch, methods that are highly effective in the West hardly make a dent in China. Even 70% detection has been hard to achieve in China.

Email Systems partners with Commtouch for anti-spam and anti-virus software

Email Systems has signed an international partnership to offer millions of its customers the anti-spam and anti-virus software from Commtouch, which has developed a unique approach to blocking emails that has secured more than 25 million end users worldwide in just eighteen months.

Neil Hammerton, Managing Director of Email Systems said “According to leading international technology analyst IDC, the RPD approach detects and blocks spam in the first few minutes of an outbreak, unlike other anti-spam approaches. Although our previous record of spam detection was actually almost 99%, this partnership further bolsters our service offering, ensuring our customers have peace of mind with the knowledge that they are protected by the absolute best of what’s available, particularly against viruses which are becoming increasingly invasive with each outbreak.”

Oren Drori, Director of Product Marketing at Commtouch, added “As the only real time anti spam technology in the market, we are confident that Commtouch is the best product available in this sector as it provides cover for the critical time period when traditional scanning methods lag behind our solution, which can be the difference between email running normally and a total breakdown of service. Email Systems online managed ASP approach, which allows them to take the strain off their client’s shoulders regarding spam and viruses, represents an ideal fit for our product. With malware developing into various new areas – such as phishing and increasingly sophisticated online fraud for example – it’s more important than ever for every user of email to be protected from these threats.”
